HYPOGLYCEMIA INFORMATION Hypoglycemia.............What is it????Please read!!! This is very important!!! Yorkshire Terriers and many other toy breeds, due to their small size and rapid metabolism, are prone to a condition called, Hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is a condition that occurs when your puppy’s blood sugar level (glucose) falls below normal. Glucose is what the body uses as fuel and is necessary for the brain tissue and muscles for function. Although it can be fatal, it is avoidable when equipped with the proper knowledge. Some symptoms are: ● Lethargy ● Loss of Appetite ● Puppy’s gums turn white ● Vomiting ● Wobbly /Dizzy Puppy ● Disorientation ● Loss of conscientiousness ● Trembling or Shaking (often mistaken as a cold or nervousness) What causes low blood sugar? Hypoglycemia most frequently occurs in puppies under the age of 6 months of age though it is not unheard of in older dogs. The threat usually resolves as the dog matures. Your puppy’s blood sugar level can drop for many reasons. It can be caused by any stressful situation. (Shipping, a missed meal, being chilled, or even exhaustion from too much play). Puppy hypoglycemia can usually be prevented by feeding frequent meals and by making dry puppy food and water available at all times. Since Yorkies cannot eat a lot at one time, they literally run out of fuel quickly. A premium puppy diet is recommended such as Life's Abundance holistic formula. A nutritional supplement high in sugar, such as Karo Syrup or honey, or Nutrical can be used often to keep your puppy’s blood sugar level normal and be used to stimulate a puppy who is refusing to eat or when they are stressed or simply engaging in too much activity. It can be rubbed into the puppy’s gums or licked off your finger several times a day to perk him up and stimulate his appetite. |
